The BS of OB

OBs....what good are they really? Yes, yes, I realize that they have their place. But I am so sick of hearing their scare tactics on women which are just misleading and foster an environment of fear. All for whatever crazy agenda they have. Take Megan. She asked me to be her labor support person for her birth. Now, she is a VBAC, and yes, her first C-section was necessary. But her OB fills her with stats on the "risks" of uterine abruption for the vaginal birth while neglecting to give her any stats on the risks associated with C-sections. Instead he says to her "the risks in C-section are really only to the mother" as if that somehow makes it all better. I mean honestly! Oh, well, only she could die, so it's not really anything to concern oneself with. He says to her "I just want you to have the facts". Yea, except you only give her ONE set of "facts" without the other facts with which to make a true informed choice. Luckily Megan did some research and got the information herself, which support what everyone knows to be true...VBACs are WAY safer than a repeat C-section unless there is some underlying problem. Stupid OBs....they just piss me off.

Yes, that is my rant for today.

Here is a good article someone posted in [info]naturalbirth today: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/afp/080304/oddities/israel_religion_offbeat

And yeah. Filled with rage! I hate that it's such a fight for women to achieve the birth they want because doctors are too damned lazy to put the effort into caring for their patients. Cha-ching is pretty much all they hear when faced with a choice between a vaginal birth and a c-section.

Have you watched Ricki Lake's The Business Of Being Born? I haven't yet, but I heard you can view it for free by signing up for a trial period of netflix.

It's so good Megan has you for her support :) Personally, I always have more to think about and consider after coming away from a conversation with you, and it always opens up new doors to new thought with me.
I also wanted to say that it seems to be a forgotten factor that women see physicians and midwives and OBs and become their clients. Is it not good business practice to please your client, and to do what they ask of you, instead of belittling them and inspiring fear in their hearts? If the client asks for something you don't have much experience with, should you not train yourself to be of more use to them? Should you not go that one step further to make them happy? How did this ever get to be the other way around, where the employee gets to boss the employer around? It drives me nuts.
I so want to watch that movie!

Thanks Nat....honestly that is a real compliment.

Doctors seem to think that they own people, or that we should just be thankful for their expert opinion, without considering that we know a thing or do about our own bodies.
Grrrrrr... That is sooooo agrivating... I hae a friend tha is considering not having another for she was told Csection was her only option for she had one with her first.... I try and help her with other info so she cna make a better (in my opinion) and informed decision for herself.... but she is convinced I think by the OB.....

Way to go to you and your friend....

I would love love love to see the movie too... its been a big topic here in the doula group on line.... many are raving about it
