It's the weirdest thing
For weeks now, a silly housefly has been landing on me whenever I am reading or just sitting at the computer. The fly lands on my arm and just sits there, cleaning himself or hanging out. Normally I am completely grossed out by flies, but this one seems pretty nice. No endless annoying buzzing. Although there is still the disease carrying ick factor. Still, I thought it was weird that this fly was hanging around me all the time and behaving in a manner that seemed really strange. I looked a little bit into the fly, specifically looking for some mythology when I read this....(first though you should know that the genus for fly is Musca)
"In Greek mythology, there was a woman named Musca who was a beautiful and talented singer. She was, unfortunately, the rival of the goddess (Selene) for the love of a fellow named Endymion. (Selene) did not want a rival, so she turned Musca into a fly. The genus of the house fly, Musca, was named after the woman who was turned into the fly."
OK...how weird is that? I have read that myth perhaps a million times in my research into Selene and NEVER did I see this one. Selene is in <> because they used Diana as the goddess, which is just some sort of mistakes because a)Diana is a Roman Goddess and b)This myth is very clearly linked with the Goddess Selene.
Anyway, it was a strange thing.....and I haven't seen the fly yet today.
OK...and talking about other hit you over the head spiritual experiences...the other day I am in Wal-Mart looking at crochet needles. I hear this raucous bird call...it takes a minute or two to compute. I look around and think "I just heard a bird call...sounds real, not like one of those fake product ones. Now wait a sec, that bird call sounds very familiar...did someone bring their bird to the store...no, wait a sec, that sounds like a MAGPIE". For a moment, I briefly consider that I am going insane, when there it is again. I look around the corner, no-one else seems to notice it. I walk around back to where I was and there it is again. And then...there she is. Flying around the fake vegetation in the store, a beautiful magpie. She is clearly distressed as she takes off, flies around the store and then comes back to the fake plants...probably because it is the closest thing to real trees. She squawks some more and takes off again, but doesn't come back. I am thinking...how can I help this magpie? Even if I got on a ladder and tried to grab her, she would just fly away. Still, I am afraid that someone will hurt her. We grab our stuff, and start walking around the store looking for her, don't know what I would do, but if she knocked herself out by flying into something I could pick her up and take her outside. We can't find the magpie again. We walk around the store for the next 20 minutes looking. I tell one of the managers...they had no idea. The manager says "Well, I am sure the bird will fly outside as the doors are open" (which they totally weren't....I looked". Anyway, she was gone as far as I could see and there wasn't anything more I could do. None of the other associates seemed to even know there had been a bird flying around the store and squawking quite loudly. So, I am thinking that my totem really wanted to contact me :). For what, I don't know, but maybe just a reminder to honor her, and to be myself.
More about the magpie later....
